Do Carrots help you see in the Dark?
Although carrots are a great source of vitamin A, this old wives tail is a myth! Vitamin A does help protect the eyes and without it your eye sight will deteriorate. Vision in darkness can be repaired by using vitamin A but only to the point of a healthy person – carrots will not enhance your night vision!
The rumour, ‘eating carrots helps you see in the dark’ was spread during the battle of Britain by the RAF. Their pilots were using new radar technologies to engage enemy planes. This technology was top secret and the commanders spread the news that these accurate pilots were eating large amounts of carrots enabling them to see better. This stopped the Germans getting too suspicious and encouraged the British population to grow and eat their own vegetables.
